We met Robin and Larry in the late 70's and kept in touch throughout the years.
I was hired at Sports Travel by Helen Pain without any travel training. Larry said to me "once in sales you can sell anything no problem" He was the life of the office always willing to run errands, deliver tickets or pick snacks and lunch. He knew the business but being out and about was more fun, than at a desk.
Larry loved to tell jokes. He would get a couple people together and say Hey guys "I have a new joke"
You would then hear Robin say within earshot,"Larry, keep it clean"and He would laugh and smile and say " I will,I will" and proceed with some funny quip. He had a way of making everyone feel comfortable. He would come to work in his V neck golf sweaters with smile on his face. He could talk to anyone that walked into the office. He reassured me don't worry the computer in the early stages then, just kill em with kindness. Those words are so true even today.
We had 4 kids in both families 1 year apart so we were trading off working in the office and caring for the next newborn. Larry would run get baby food, or milk and change diapers with the best of them.
We loved his passion for sports that we shared, cheering on the Chargers and watching kids play sports. I was so grateful for the training from Robin and Larry at the agency, it became my lifelong career.
When Gary and I and the family moved to Oklahoma we keep in touch. Robin and Larry left the travel business,I admired their desire to take the exchange students under their wing and form friendships for life. They then continued their love of travel and visited students in their home countries.
We would visit several times a year and spend a picnic at Mission Beach and Larry would never mention or complain about his illness. He seems to take it on like a job ,what's the next challenge, the next treatment. He would smile that grin and never have self pity in public.
Robin always his nurse, appointment guru, and very best cheerleader. In the later stages of life, I think
Larry decided he wanted to just retire from the job of having cancer and everyone would need to except it. You couldn't really protest because it was a long difficult road.
Larry will always be a long life friend who we will never forget. God speed Larry hope the golf is good and it's sunshine every day. Love Mary and Gary
